REAL ID Bill Update

Unlike the red light camera bill update, this one will be short, as there is no bill.

Due to a lack of funds, I was not able to push the REAL ID (the 2005 national ID card law converting your driver license) legislation I wrote (RIDE Act) for this year. I had to focus my limited resources on the red light camera bill, which is now moving.

There is a lot of resistance from the Governor on down to getting rid of REAL ID despite clear constitutional concerns and outright violations. It does not seem to matter that:

  • About half the other states are not doing it;
  • The Florida legislature is now passing legislation to give relief to tourists so they do not need a license here; and
  • Mr. Obama’s recent executive order has made it easier for an illegal alien to get a license in Florida than a married or divorced woman.

My goal at this point is to get an amendment to a driver license bill. Since the politicians will not stand up for Florida, we can use a provision within the REAL ID Act to offer two identifications in Florida, as is done in other states that comply with REAL ID:

  • A Florida “federal identification” with a gold star that can be used to board airplanes, enter federal buildings, enter nuclear plants, or subject the holder to anything as determined by the DHS Secretary. These are the 4 “official purposes” of REAL ID; you’ll never read about the last one in the media.
  • A Florida “non-federal identification” that can be used to drive a car. Back in the days before the Bill of Rights was shredded by the Republicans, this was called a driver license, and it doesn’t require your life history to be scanned into a state database.

This important issue has been overshadowed by Second Amendment concerns. I’m hopeful those that realize the need for the Second Amendment will also do so and take action for violations of the Tenth Amendment such as REAL ID. Already in Missouri, a state that banned REAL ID, concerns are arising about a backdoor REAL ID program for concealed weapon permit holders. These violations of liberty are inevitably related.

If I am able to find a bill that is amended, I will update and ask for support via phone calls and emails.
